The Legacy of Gesha Oasis: The Four-Generation Story Behind Raúl Durán's Farm

When you experience the dazzling floral complexity and vibrant fruit notes of our new Oasis Gesha, you are tasting more than just an expertly processed bean—you are celebrating four generations of persistence and passion from the Durán family in Colombia's Tolima region.

The sheer quality of the coffee is rooted in the history of the land and the commitment of the people who cultivate it.

The Seed of a Dream in Gaitania

The story of the farm begins in 1970 when Raúl Durán’s father, who worked for the National Coffee Federation, arrived in the remote lane of Gaitania. He and his wife, Gilma Gutiérrez (Raúl’s mother), soon acquired 4 hectares of land, laying the humble foundation for what would become an influential specialty coffee farm.

Raúl, born in 1973, grew up immersed in the rhythm of coffee cultivation, inheriting the deep knowledge of the land that only decades of family effort can provide.

Inheritance, Partnership, and Growth

In 2006, Raúl and his three brothers inherited the family farm. However, the turning point came in 2008 when Raúl and his wife, Astrid Medina, bought out his brothers’ shares, committing themselves fully to evolving the family legacy.

Under their shared ownership, the farm transformed from a small, traditional operation into a modern, thriving family business. Today, the cultivation is a fully family affair, with their son, daughter, granddaughter, and a nephew all working side-by-side. This collective commitment ensures that every stage of the process, from cultivation to the intensive anaerobic washing, is handled with meticulous care.

A Coffee Farm Built for Complexity

Today, the farm boasts approximately 60,000 coffee trees, showcasing a remarkable diversity that speaks to the Durán family’s commitment to innovation. While they maintain traditional varietals like Caturra, Colombia, and Castillo, their forward-thinking approach is evident in their cultivation of high-value, exotic varieties such as Gesha, Borbón Rosado, and Papayo.

It is this profound history, coupled with their willingness to invest in unique, premium varietals and cutting-edge processing, that makes our Oasis Gesha such an exceptional and unforgettable coffee.
