Tradition Meets Innovation at Honduras Finca La Cruz
The story of Finca La Cruz, home to our new exceptional coffee, is one where deep tradition fuels a bold future. The farm itself is rooted in history, named for a concrete cross built in 1961 at its highest point—a place where the local community of Ojojona still gathers to celebrate Día de la Cruz.
In Honduras, Día de la Cruz holds dual significance, uniting faith with the rhythm of the land:
Religious: It is a Catholic observance that commemorates the legendary discovery of the "True Cross" by Saint Helena. Celebrations involve adorning crosses with flowers and holding various religious activities.
Agricultural: Crucially, it symbolically marks the beginning of the rainy season and the start of the planting cycle. Many communities associate the cross with bringing the life-giving rain vital for the region's agricultural economy.
Fourth-generation coffee farmer Fredy Diaz
Here, fourth-generation coffee farmer Fredy Diaz embraces this heritage while pushing the boundaries of specialty coffee. Fredy is a passionate experimenter, actively working to expand his processing capabilities by building more solar dryers and acquiring fermentation tanks to support his deep exploration of the fermentation process. He is already looking to the future by expanding his planted varieties to include highly sought-after types like Geisha, Paraneima, and Ethiopian varietals.
Fredy’s drive is deeply personal, inspired by his loving and supportive wife and son, and is validated by the recognition he receives. As he mentions, "When a farm's and producer's name is placed on bags, packaging, or coffee shop menus, we feel proud and motivated."
The power of direct trade
For Fredy, the dream is clear. He shares, “I believe every coffee producer’s dream is to sell their harvest directly to buyers and markets that value and pay a fair price for the effort and sacrifice behind growing coffee."
This dream became a reality thanks to the support of the Raga Project and its founder, Rony Gamez, who helped connect producers with specialty markets. Fredy expresses his gratitude, noting that selling directly "allows us to improve our quality of life, invest in better infrastructure, and expand coffee areas with exotic varieties that achieve higher market value." This direct connection gives crucial visibility to his name and Finca La Cruz, ensuring your purchase directly supports his vision.
