A vibrant and expressive single origin filter coffee from Ethiopia’s West Arsi zone — a high‑altitude growing region within Oromia, bordered by Sidama, East Shewa, Arsi, Bale and Guji. Although now formally recognised as West Arsi, this area was historically included within Sidama, and still shares its signature cool temperatures, high humidity and early‑ripening seasons. Communities here farm small rural plots with minimal agrochemical use, relying on coffee as their major cash crop while growing food staples for their families.
West Arsi coffees are typically made up of the local landrace varietals wolisho and kurume, prized for their fruit‑forward clarity and elegant structure. This lot comes from Mewa in Nensebo, grown by smallholder farmers with an average farm size of 2–9 hectares. The zone is home to nearly 3 million people, of which around 90% are Oromo, and is known for its rich agricultural history, sandy loam soils and exceptional growing conditions above 2000 MASL.
Coffee Processing
Approximately 650 smallholder farmers deliver their hand‑picked cherries to the Mewa Washing Station — often travelling long distances, sometimes by donkey. After initial sorting and floating to remove defects, the cherries are dried naturally on African raised beds for 10–20 days, turned frequently to ensure even drying and prevent spoilage. The result is a clean, fruit‑driven natural with excellent structure and sweetness.
